ADHERE + DENY  |  YELIENA

Adhere And Deny presented YELIENA, Maggie Nagle’s reconstruction of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya from November 5th to November 15th, 2003.

Maggie Nagle, in her reconstruction of Uncle Vanya, reversed the scenes so that the story of this classic play is now told from the point of view of Yeliena. She is able to break out of the structure of the play to say her piece regarding the events and characters driving her actions. She is the light, the centre of this dramatic universe, who the other characters want to own, change, possess and use. In Ms. Nagle’s version, in stead of becoming weakened, sapped of life, she increases in strength.

YELIENA derived from Adhere And Deny’s project Chekhov Reconstructed. Adhere And Deny acknowledges the contribution of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights in workshopping of Ms. Nagle's reconstruction.

YELIENA was performed by Graham Ashmore, Nadin Gilroy, Carolyn Gray, Robert Slade and Gordon Tanner. It was directed by Grant Guy.

Robert Enright
CBC Radio One:

'And this cast is excellent. These are some of our finest actors in town who play all the parts. And really rings both true and funny as you watch it going on. And now, the other thing which is intriguing is, of course, is that they are using ... puppets ... so, all the while, you are watching the play you do see the actors and see what they are saying. Because these puppets are, in a sense, in front of them ... I realized it is like they are talking to the back of their own heads, which they are literally doing, because that is the relationship of the mask to the actor themselves, and that makes sense because these characters are, in a sense, so self-involved. They don’t actually get out of themselves. So it works perfectly.'
