ADHERE + DENY  |  UBU ROI

A classic of the French and world avant garde, Ubu Roi, by Alfred Jarry, is a burlesque comedy which fully lampoons, with the absolute glory and splendor of pataphysics, the morality, the ambitions, the rationality and bloated self-importance of the bourgoisie.

While Ubu Roi is no longer able to cause a riot, as it first did when premiered in 1896, it has not lost its satirical bite. Its acidic barbs are still capable of knocking the audience over the head with its physics stick.

All nineteen characters in Jarry’s classic fable of a tyrant’s inexorable rise to power are small blocks of wood manipulated by one puppeteer/actor, Robert Slade.

"Originally presented as part of Plug In Gallery’s Moral Imagination exhibition. (Robert ) Slade energetically moves around the puppets as he flawlessly recites the lines of 19 characters."

-Kevin Prokosh. The Winnipeg Free Press, January, 1999.
