ADHERE + DENY  |  Paradise Lost

Adhere And Deny was presented April 22 to May 2, 2009.

To capture and justify the religious rebellion of his day John Milton cast God in his own image and with Milton’s political objectives. Being faithful (and unfaithful) to Milton’s reinvention of God as a warrior and territorial king, Adhere And Deny recreated Milton’s epic poem in it’s image. The story of Adam and Eve has greater beauty and more duplicity than Milton ever imaged. Into Milton’s mythology, and deformed angelogy, Adhere And Deny introduced Lucifer as the Great Inquisitor, it reminded us of the alliance of Lucifer and Lilith cemented by primordial hatred, a naive and trusting Adam, and, mostly, Adhere And Deny kept faithful to Milton’s belief that the greatest gift to humanity was Free Will. Free Will not only proves God plays dice but God Himself doesn’t know where the dice will land (Stephen Hawkings).

PARADISE LOST was directed and designed by Grant Guy and featured Graham Ashmore, Carolyn Gray, Rea Kavanagh, Gordon Tanner and Mia Van Leeuwen and with voice over provided by Matt McLeod. A videoscape was provided by Alex Poruchnyk and a soundscore by Susan Chafe. Snakeskin Suit Music by Graham Ashmore with Lyrics Grant Guy. Sharon Bajer and Sharon Alward assisted directed.
