Using a toy theatre as the venue for Kleist:Fragments, we witness Henriette Vogel and Heinrich von Kleist caught in a Swedenborg like Hell, forced to recall their cry for Sehnsucht, the Romanticisms wild, mad desire which strains outward towards something it can never reach because it is really in the heart itself. Kleist the author of The Broken Jug, The Prince of Homburg and Michael Kohlhaas, who made a universal appeal to spontaneous feelings and the infallibility of the unconscious, sought a passion which could not be sabotaged by thought. His passion remained unsatisfied and Kleist became a volunteer for the Cult of Death.
