ADHERE + DENY | KATARSIS (MADMAN AND THE NUN)

Katarsis,
a fragmentary theatre piece, uses Witkiewiczs play The Madman and
the Nun as a catalyst to explore his soul and disenchantment with the
sated industrialized and mechanical world around him. He is drawn into
the world of the insane that are able to link up with the world by means
of threads which are inaccessible to normal people. Katarsis is a biography
of one mans soul, not his life.
"The actor maneuvered cardboard puppets through short scenes, puppets
who are in fact, heroes enclosed in the glass jars of their obsessions
which separate them from the real world. In this manner, Ashmore quite
successfully portrayed the metaphysical nature of Witkiewiczs thought.
In spite of the fact that the show was interrupted by short intermissions
between the mini-scenes, Grant Guy achieved integrity and wholeness, and
his production spoke sharply and directly to the audience."
